The ER Physician at the South Shore General Hospital faces a critical situation where he/she receives an urgent patient but neither the ER doctor nor the other doctors respond to the situation. Dr. Jones attributes his lack of response to the situation to the fact that the hospital’s administration giving them lower wages than those in the ER section. The paper is about how the physician, the doctors and how the administration should resolve the issue.

6. How Should the ER Physician have handled this Matter? What is the Best Way to Ensure Emergency Room Coverage?
According to the case, the ER physician’s job was to alert any on-call doctors concerning urgent calls. In order to gain the job of an ER physician, one must have enough knowledge and experience that should enable them to handle any critical illness or perform a first aid. On this particular case, the ER physician had several options that he/she should have cycled through to handle the situation safely. To begin with, the physician’s knowledge was enough to perform a quick first aid on the patient until the on-call doctor was available. The physician should not have waited for any help but would have done it himself/ herself. In addition, the physician would have referred the patient to another nearby hospital for immediate response.
Emergency rooms are an important branch in any hospital worldwide. They handle critical and urgent illnesses. Coverage of the South Shore General Hospital was very poor on that particular day and time. Doctors and nurses should come up with a timetable that shows which of them would be on-call and on which day. This is the simplest method that would ensure they are active when performing their jobs. The hospital management should also treat the staff equally to prevent any inconveniences.
