History of Emergency Medicine
Introduction
Emergency medicine (EM) is a specialty that revolves around taking care of unplanned patients in an assorted manner. The patients’ influx in hospitals is usually unscheduled and undifferentiated. Such patients are given many different specialized therapies at the same time to help resuscitate the patient to gain stability. Such cases normally call for a team of specialized nurses and seasoned doctors to avoid losing the emergency patients due to negligence. The emergency cases of a strong historical background that has made many hospitals to be known as emergency centers or hospitals since they only handle patients with emergency cases.
Historical Backgrounds of EM in the 1960s
This was the time of the advent of this branch of medicine. Initially America had private medical practitioners who took their time offering service in homes. Such Medical practitioners were mostly on call to offer the services to the few clients they had. The idea of emergency medicine came about due to the increase in population during this time that called for increased medical attention. Many emergency cases were visited by the few doctors at the site of incidence. This became overwhelming due to serious increase of population driving such emergency cases to increase. Since skills to handle these influx of patients in dire need of help was minimal, Alexandria and Pontiac drew a plan to set up the first facility which could handle such patients and train doctors on matters of emergency care. Pontiac hospital set up a facility that had few part-time practitioners handling patients with emergency cases. Alexandria on the other hand also set up a facility that absorbed many practitioners who were on private practice. In 1968 American College of Emergency Physicians (ACEP) was formed to help increase the number of skilled practitioners. This was because the number of patients had increased exponentially with few specialized medical practitioners. In 1970s and 1980s, emergency medical associations, medical councils and boards were created to help govern emergency hospitals, train practitioners and certify students to improve professionalism and number of physicians offering emergency medical services (Jeanmonod, Tomasi and Dan).
Historical Backgrounds of EM between 1990s and 2000
In the 1990s there were increased malpractices in the Emergency medicine governance. Many institutions instituted in the 60s and 80s had been accused of mass corruption and poor governance. Negative publicity about emergency medicine agencies hit the media and public domain making people to lose interest in them. There were major lawsuits that took place between this period that led to the reform of these emergency medical institutions incepted earlier. This led to the formation of other strong governance bodies to bring sanity and integrity in the emergency medicine profession. In the early years of 2000 major law suits were dropped and the numbers of emergency medicine groups were on the rise. There was a petition during this period to allow emergency medicine to not to be in the hand of corporate governance. This was majorly meant to allow patients involved in emergency incidents and not insured to get free treatment and Medicare without discrimination. The bodies covering licensure of emergency medicine has opened its doors to many emergency medicine agencies provided they fulfilled all the requirements of the board. The development of technology has improved the way emergency medicine is currently handled. All the emergency institutions have websites and are online thus improving accessibility to their facilities. The tall fee number of 911 has always been open to everyone. Technology has currently improved the services offered by emergency medicine hospitals (Prescott).
Emergency medicine jobs were and still advertised on the hospitals website and the online recruitment agency called hospital recruiting .com. Australian College of Emergency Medicine (ACEM) also allows those offering to subscribe with them and offer emergency medical new job positions. They charge such medical bodies a fee to use their portal. All emergency medic...
