How Has Leadership Changed Over the Last Ten Years, and Why?
Many aspects of leadership have changed dramatically over the last decade. However, there are some leadership principles and styles that have remained constant. Successful leaders alter their strategies quickly and appropriately to keep up with the pace and meet all the organizational goals. Leadership that does not accept change, on the other hand, lowers production and, in some situations, fails to achieve the desired goals. Over the last ten years, leadership has shifted from autocracy to inclusivity, aided by technology, and shifted from commanding to an empowerment style.
Before the last decade, authoritarian rule was a typical occurrence. Leaders, in particular, were prone to making choices based exclusively on their individual opinions and perceptions. However, with the rise of remote employees, effective management has become even more difficult to implement (Flood, 2019). As a result, during the last decade, CEOs have been obligated to embrace inclusivity to foster employee loyalty. Furthermore, the new leadership styles have taken into account the employees' views when making decisions. Leaders, for example, have benefited from innovative technologies such as teleconferencing, which allows for live conversations anywhere globally. Video conferencing saves time and money by removing the need for business travel (Julsrud et al., 2012). Live video conferences have given leaders unrivaled leverage, allowing for unprecedented workplace flexibility. As a result of technological advancements over the last decade, leaders' joint activities have become significantly easier.
In addition, leadership styles have shifted from one of command to one of empowerment. The rise of millennials entering the workforce, each with their own set of goals and viewpoints, has accelerated the shift toward empowerment. According to Martin et al. (2013), empowering and directing leadership improved the workforce's primary task performance, but empowerment alone increased proactive behaviors. As a result, the millennial age has forced executives to embrace an integrative and empowering leadership style that focuses on employee behaviors while mobilizing appropriate resources to maximize productivity. Indeed, adopting an empowerment leadership style in response to the needs of the millennial age has increased productivity and improved employee behavior.
Over the last decade, change has undoubtedly emerged in leadership, mostly to speed up extensive involvement in decision-making, adopting new technology in leadership, and adopting an empowering leadership style. Employee involvement in decisi
