Corporate social responsibility (CSR) can be defined as a self-sustaining business model necessary to make a company be socially responsible—to itself, its shareholders, and the society in its entirety. By practicing CSR, these companies that are often referred to as corporate citizens become conscious of the impact they have on all aspects of society, comprising of social, economic, and environmental impacts. Apple Inc. has employed the concept of sustainable CSR for a long time. Some of the initiatives undertaken by Apple Inc. include; Environmental efforts, Volunteering, Ethical labor practices, and Philanthropy. The company has contributed to a lot of social welfare activities, and sustainable corporate social responsibility in its endeavor to give back to the community as deliberated in this paper.
The main objective of companies is to make profits and progress in their revenue collection through their line of specialization. Nonetheless, companies' shareholders and other stakeholders call upon their companies to help the country in solving some of the challenges in the society that concerns social-economic development, and the environment (Żmuda, Prokopowicz & Król, 2015). There have been divergent views on how responsibilities should be allocated across the public, corporate stakeholders, and private sectors, which the stakeholders demand that the company should recognize the broader scope of the problem by addressing society-oriented problems (Rosolen & Maclennan, 2016). The move has resulted in a lot of companies collaborating with the stakeholders to address environmental, social, economic, and corporate governance issues. These are the issues that are commonly referred to as corporate social responsibility (CSR) and they address those views and concerns in the corporates strategic decision making. To be in a position to handle CSR issues, many companies have outlined their sustainable way of handling social responsibilities concerns.
The Benefits of Corporate Social Responsibility in General
Apple’s success in general can be associated to the company’s ability to satisfy the stakeholders and the CSR. The stakeholders impose demand that convert to CSR and which influence the performance of the firm. Several benefits are related to CSR to the corporate, society, and government. Companies engage in CSR to sustain their business (Brown & Nwagbara, 2018). The CSR can be of strategic importance to the company and many companies use it to build their brand image and to uplift their brands into the customers' image. This psychological approach becomes ideal when the company approaches CSR with its core competencies and values (Brown & Nwagbara, 2018). Environmental policies have been part of the CSR activities where corporates contribute to environmental preservation through green operations within their corporates.
The CSR has helped the company to improve its relationship with the stakeholders. Apple Inc. includes the concerns of its shareholders in its strategies for CSR. The CSR is important in building its relationship with its customers. Recent findings suggest that CSR change customer’s attitude towards a particular company and its products (Myers et al., 2018). To begin with, CSR creates a customer identification relationship with the corporate commonly referred to as customer-corporate (C-C) identification. The approach by C-C identification is a mark of overlapping in clients' self-concept and the perception of the corporate (Myers et al., 2018).
