The President and Fog of War Scenario
Ending Japan’s increasing military superiority was a top priority for the United States. Japan had proved to be a strong force, especially when they bombed Pearl Harbor. To end the war and distract Japan from future invasions, America was undecided between using Operation Downfall and the Manhattan Gadget Project. Although Operation Downfall would have succeeded, there would have been many casualties on both the American and Japanese sides. Therefore, the Manhattan Project was a better option because while it killed many Japanese, there were no casualties on the American side and it helped to end the war.
Robert McNamara served as the eighth Secretary of States for America. He served two presidents, namely John Kennedy and Lyndon Johnson, between 1961 and 1968. McNamara escalated the war between America and Vietnam (Selden &Selden, 2015). He was pivotal to supporting attacks that saw America firebomb selected cities in Japan. McNamara mainly conducted a statistical evaluation for General Curtis LeMay, who headed the Air Forces. There was no chance of losing the war, and he made sure America succeeded, or else they would be prosecuted.
