Undoubtedly, media can infuse ideas into the minds of the people. Unconsciously and unwittingly, these ideas naturally compel people to acquire and develop a belief system that transforms society according to the perspectives that media feeds it (Turrow, 2014 p.19). It is for this reason that media holds power over the people, and with a concentration of media ownership such as the case discussed in this paper, a concentration of power and influence is imminent. In this context, it should be recognized that larger control over forms of media such as newspapers and magazines allows for greater influence over the views and opinions of the people; ultimately, concentration of media equates to substantial power and influence in any society.
From the 1980s and onwards, at least one in three newspapers sold in Britain was published by News International (Hollowell, 2008 p.220). The company was later renamed News UK in 2013 following a scandal in its top-selling newspaper, News of the World, which was closed in 2011.
