Managing A Community as a Leader in the Field of Orthodontics
If someone would have informed me years ago that I would be in this situation, probably I would have not believed it. The situation in Cuba has driven my family to seek refuge in the United States because of political restlessness in the country. Life as an immigrant has always been tough, but I have managed to overcome the obstacles and managed to achieve my goals and dreams. I have challenged and pushed myself, managed to further my studies as a professional dental provider, and am very well equipped in managing a community as a leader in the field of orthodontics.
I have complimented myself by completing pre-doctoral studies and becoming president and co-founder of the Hispanic Dental Students Association Chapter at Howard University. It was my life ambition to offer both an easier transition to dental care and assist the student body and faculty in communicating with Spanish-speaking patients. From introductory, a dental terminology workshop was established to help in translation and communication with a wider range of patients. I was able to understand the need the Hispanic community had and the importance of maintaining teeth alignment with oral health. Serving the community has always been my dream and motivation to pursue higher education in dentistry. As a qualified orthodontist, I would prioritize the education of my community while providing readily and quality treatment that they could need.
I have always been passionate about dentistry. However, my ambitions started to develop when I first transitioned through dental school when I started to gain interest in orthodontics. Throughout many community services opportunities during my years as a dental student, one of the most gratifying experiences I achieved was when I was part of the few selected for the Jamaican Dental Mission 17, an organization that has been offering free dental care to the community of Montego Bay in Jamaica for the past 18 years. Working in a multidisciplinary approach, the trip gave me the first-hand opportunity to help treat a patient suffering from poor oral health including children in their adolescent stage. This experience widens my knowledge of how orthodontic work can greatly impact dentistry in an entirely different capacity exceeding the limitations of a general dentist.
