Interpersonal communication involves exchanging ideas, information, and feelings among two or more individuals through verbal or non-verbal means (DeVito, 2019). Verbal communication involves spoken words, whereas non-verbal communication does not include spoken words, such as the use of gestures and facial expressions. Interpersonal communication frequently involves face-to-face (one on one) exchange of information. The exchange involves voice, body language, facial expressions, and the use of gestures. An individual’s interpersonal communication proficiency can be determined through the efficiency of transferring information to others. There are types of interpersonal communication that can be used regarding the kind of environment the information should be conveyed. In the military fraternity, interpersonal communication plays an integral part, as will be discussed below. Additionally, the study will discuss the different types of interpersonal communication and its benefits.
Types of Interpersonal Communication
Oral Communication
Oral communication involves the verbal exchange of information and ideas between two or more individuals (Levis, 2018). This type of interpersonal communication can be either formal or informal. It involves the use of spoken words. Different tones can be used depending on the state of an individual or the environment. For example, during military war missions, a commanding tone is commonly used to give orders. Oral communication applies to nearly everywhere where there are human interactions. Examples of verbal communication include phone calls, public speaking, meetings, Podcasts, radio interviews, audio messages, and many more.
Written Communication
Written communication entails words and symbols such as emojis and punctuations marked or typed with a pencil, pen, or other writing tools (Thompson & Filik, 2016). In other words, written communication involves interactions that use written words. Written communication plays a significant role in different working environments. In the modern world of literacy, written communication is increasingly becoming useful, especially in the information age. The information era has transformed how we communicate and place an increasing emphasis on written against oral communications. With the introduction of computers, transmission of written information requires competency in writing skills. One can send written texts and receive feedback with the use of computers via emails. When working remotely, the written communication is vital as one will be able to communicate with their bosses, whether via emails, Google Docs, or Slack messages. Other written communication examples include text messages, scrolls, reports, proposals, PowerPoints, and other written materials.
Nonverbal Communication
