French and Raven’s Five Bases of Power
Power impacts our conduct and the way we communicate in the working environment. Power can be portrayed as the affected choices of one individual from the sway of someone else with a higher power (Heinemann, 2008). Contingent upon how the force is applied, it might have a positive or negative impact on an association. There are five bases of force that can impact people or in the working environment (Porter, Angle, & Allen, 2003).
Among the leaders who practice the five bases of power is Mr. Robin Hayes, who is the President of JetBlue Airways and could be described as having legitimate power. Hayes had legitimate power, which originated from being an employer. His representatives trust that he has the privilege to impact them given his higher position. Mr. Robin Hayes legitimate positional force permitted him to push employees to work to their maximum capacity and achieve his objectives.
When it comes to referent power, Walt Disney had this power base as his devotees in his association respected him and his dreams (Heinemann, 2008). Disney's representatives worked hard for Walt, withstanding when he was troublesome and demanding. He made them feel esteemed and gave them a feeling of family. He made more profound relationships with his representatives, which thus gave him a more charismatic force.
When it comes to coercive power, there is no better example than who has been the Supreme Commander of North Korea since 1997. His way of leadership was based on a strict military background. His punishment of his people for not pleasing him has caused many moral issues throughout the world. The people of Korea had no option but to obey their coercive leader for if they did not they could stand the chance of facing brutal punishment.
As for reward power, Steve Jobs had reward influence both inside and outside Apple as he was among the wealthiest people in the United States. Apple's representatives were said to buckle down so as to win his consent. Cordell Ratzlaff, who worked intimately with Jobs on OS X for about a year and a half, said that "He could haul the best out of individuals".
As for the base of power that I find most appealing to me is the referent. This is because the leaders are seen as people who are positive role models for their followers. Their persistence, determination, and creative ability are a couple of cases of their excellent attributes (Porter, 2003). A lot of people look upon them and respect their achievements and their zeal to overcome all the hardships they incurred before attaining leadership. To the followers, following after one's objectives is critical.
