Despite their contribution to economic development and enhancing living standards, passenger cars’ movement in and out of city centers represents one of the major sources of air and noise pollution, a problem threatening the world’s sustainability in the future. As a result, the debate has arisen concerning whether city planners and local governments should outlaw these motorists in central areas and instead provide incentives for walking, biking, and the use of public means. Although shop owners in metropolis centers might oppose the decision, Strasbourg in France and Freiburg in Germany have demonstrated that banning passenger cars would constitute an excellent measure for increasing the safety and attractiveness of metropolises for residents and tourists.
Outlawing private motorists’ entry in metropolitans would reduce adverse occurrences such as accidents and bolster economic vibrancy. When faced with growing traffic-related challenges during the 1980s, Rydningen et al. (2017) indicate that Strasbourg began upgrading its public transport and expanding the pedestrian zone before discouraging heavy traffic through measures like the introduction of parking fees and the granting of free access to all town areas to cyclists and walkers.
