JUSTICE SOONER OR LATER.
What is family? We were the kind of people that would give credit where it was due. We treasured every single moment we had spent together and each and every one acted as a rock to the other. However, what was once an example to many aspiring families became a shameless disaster…
“We cannot be having the same discussion all the time Zuri; you cannot go to school anymore!” Shouted father one night.
Father had already found a wealthy suitor to take my sisters hand in marriage of whom we never agreed to. He was the old chief of our neighboring community, Chief Omulandi, big and angry on the outside but soft and empty on the inside. Father received herds of cattle from him even without my sister’s consent. Was he doing this out of greed?
Since the passing on of mother, a lot has changed around our homestead. Father found a new wife who was my age. She did nothing to do with house chores since she got married. So all the donkey work was left to dear Zuri. She looked at me with haughty eyes and never seemed to stop. On multiple occasions, she seduced me to lie with her but I declined each and every single time. Father was sincerely blown away by her charm because he never seemed to be moved by her character.
Aside from that, my brothers needed to hunt so as to prove themselves worthy of being true clan warriors. But, it seemed like I was the only one motivated to do the hunting and bring back our daily meal.
Akinyi Awire Nyadundo came from the clan of Nkuuzi in Congo. Everybody adored her for her prowess and good will. As a family and her children, we needed her for her shoulder to cry on and kind comforting words. My able mother was killed by a unanimous murderer two moons ago…
The great medicine man of our community, John Ukwe was still in search of our mother’s murderer. Though he was reluctant, we kept pestering him to speak to the gods who sought and found a solution to all our problems. John Ukwe kept assuring us that he was doing his best, and we always waited for the gods to speak to him.
The moon was out, the chief, his wife Akinyi and all his ten children were sited around a fire telling each other stories of how they wished to live their lives. My mother spoke and we all listened. She told us a story of her old friend who changed her ways and betrayed her as a friend. Her name was Akoth Shiundu of the same community and one thing she learnt from her friend Akoth is that you can never trust even your closest of friends, because they could be the ones to take you to your grave, six feet under.
Early in the morning when my brothers and I had just returned from our daily hunting routine, this time, with father, we found mother confronting Akoth on a grave matter that was not at all worth smiling.
“I told you to stay away from my husband; he is mine and will only be mine.” She said to Akoth.”
It was polite of us to mind our own business but could not help but eavesdrop on the conversation between them. Mother was not at all happy and asked Akoth, her child hood friend to never set foot in her homestead again. That was the last we heard of our loving mother. The next morning, we searched for her and found her hanged from a tree branch in the forest…
Akoth, now my step mother thinks that she had the last laugh having married the chief of the community. However, we all knew that she had a hand in mother’s death.
John Ukwe, the father to Akoth and the community’s medicine man took too long in cracking the case of our mother’s death. We were worried that why father did not care much to question John why he did not hasten his investigations.
Zuri, on the day of her wedding was crushed because we could not do anything other than what was decided by father. She moved to a new homestead with a total of six co-wives, each having six children. She missed her school as well as her brothers at home, but most importantly, she missed her mother.
Enough was enough and I decided to put my foot down. The reason why my brothers were acting reckless and my father assumed his family duties was because of the loss of mother. I sought the help of a medicine man from a far community and the truth was unbelievable. John Ukwe, our community’s medicine man and his daughter killed my mother.
I could not ...
