Adult Learners can be categorized based on Cognitive maturity or age. According to documentation compiled by UNESCO adult learners fall in the age bracket of 24 to 65 years. There are three categories of adult learners based on age; employed, unemployed and retired adult learners (Pappas, 2013). My analysis focuses on employed adult learners.
Understanding the learning needs for employed adults
Employed adults would want to pursue further studies so as to advance their professional carriers. That could result from the desire to get a promotion to the workplace so as increase the income level to raise the living standards. Another reason an employed adult would embark to learning is to break the boredom of doing the same thing (Chao, 2009). Thus, the employed adult would prefer to learn a new line of profession to do something different so as to break the boredom.
Employed adults would also prefer to pursue further learning to enhance their social relationships. Learning institutions comprise of many people originating from different backgrounds and thus by pursuing more studies working adults would get the opportunity of interacting and making new friends (Chao, 2009). Adult employees would also seek further learning so as to acquire new skills required in serving the welfare of the society. For instance, employed adults could be trained on how to help the community tackle an outbreak of a certain disease.
Some employed adults learn to comply with the external expectations from the society. For instances, the society regards those people with masters degrees and doctors of philosophy as more successful and thus many employed adults would want to pursue further learning to comply with such expectations. Finally employed adults could pursue further learning to fulfill their cognitive interests (Chao, 2009).
