Abstract
This essay is geared at understanding and improving a current process and bringing students to enroll in a different university, a case study of Houston Community college and University College. It seeks to know the current general status of university credit transfers, the ease with which they can be transferred with and the recommendations for improvement of the system. Moreover, the essay seeks to understand the task of online orientation in the college of technology and promoting enrolment from the current college to the institution.
Credit Transfer
Credit transfer, transfer credit, and advanced standing are the terms used by colleges and universities, for the procedure of granting credit to a student for educational experiences or courses undertaken at another institution (Minnesota Higher Education Coordinating Board, 1984). When a student transfers, they usually provide their academic transcripts, which list the course taken, grade and other attributes from each institution they attended when applying for enrollment (Beazley & National Board of Employment, 1993). Each transcript and the listed courses are tentatively evaluated to see if any of the courses taken satisfy the requirements of the receiving institution.
Transfer credit is not official until an academic officer of the college or university provides a written verification the award has been accepted and applied on the academic transcript meeting the degree requirement. Transfer credit is not guaranteed when a student transfers from one institution to another. Often, some prior course credit completed at another institution is not counted toward the degree requirement, extending the student's time to graduation or even voiding their prior credits all together.
