The grading system has been a subject of much public discourse for years. Grades have been used to inform students' performance, inform future schools and future employees of students' quality, and act as a pedagogical tool for performance improvement among students. However, the issue of its accuracy and reliable assessment tool remains. I agree with Paul Dressel's view on grading. The traditional grading system does not reflect an accurate picture and a complete range of abilities for students.
Grading systems inaccurately judge students because there is more to a person and schools than performance in standard exams. Grades do not reflect students' learning outcomes that have been learned or not achieved. In a traditional grading system, students either score a specific grade or don't (Bearman, Boud, & Ajjawi, 2020). The ranking of grades from A-E does not inform whether a student has achieved some of the outcomes or all outcomes, and if they have achieved specific outcomes, the grading system fails to disclose the specific outcomes achieved (Bearman, Boud, & Ajjawi, 2020). Students will never know what they are capable of under the traditional grading system and probably assume they have mastered the outcome well enough by achieving high grades. Grades should be tied to results, and more specifically, assessment should evaluate specific outcomes that have been met or not achieved by a student.
The traditional grading system rewards efforts as opposed to mastery of skills. Students that excel in the current system turn in all of their assignments on time and manage their time well (Bearman,
