"There is No Hope of Doing Perfect Research," (Griffiths, 1998, p97). Do You Agree?
Research is a continuous process and no one can claim to do perfect research. Research as defined by Simpsons &Weiner in the Oxford dictionary is; the systematic investigation and study of sources and materials with an aim to establish facts and draw new conclusions. If research was perfect, the world as we know it would be stuck in ancient findings with no progress. Human beings have done research since time immemorial and the ancient findings would apply to date without improvement. From the definition of research notably indicates that the systematic investigations should reach new conclusions. Emphasis is on new conclusions and consequently no research can come up with perfect conclusions because future research would provide new insights on previous research. Further research is born from current research and the continuum continues (Monsen & Horn 3).
In 1928, a Scottish scientist and Nobel laureate Alexander Fleming discovered a famous drug called penicillin. He derived the antibiotic from the penicillin fungi including penicillin G, penicillin V, procaine penicillin bacteria among others. Penicillin was the first drug to effectively treat serious infections form the staphylococci and streptococci bacteria. Over the years, penicillin has been used for various treatments all over the world. At the time of discovery, penicillin was the ultimate solution to the serious ailments caused by the bacteria. A major drawback in the use of penicillin was that it could only treat a narrow range of diseases and it had poor activity especially the phenoxymethylpenicilin. Later research led to the development of ampicillin which offered a wider range of spectrum activity than the original penicillins. As time goes by, new developments on penicillin drug come up to improve its activity and effectiveness. Clearly, if Fleming had done perfect research, there would be no need to develop penicillin form its original form.
Another significant research that shows there is no hope for perfect research is the development of computers. Since the early days of man’s existence, different devices have been used for computation. Since the Abacus was developed centuries ago, significant research and development in history has enabled the invention of the loom controlled by punch cards in 1800s, and now we have personal computers. In the recent past, computers were very large expensive, energy consuming machines. These early machines were very slow and inaccurate. In the 1930s, analogue computers were the best available computers. Through research and innovations, digital technology was born. This enabled the processing of large amounts of data in machine language and conveniently smaller space and less energy throug...
