Bullying is constant social, verbal physical or mental behavior which is harmful involving the misuse of authority by a group or an individual towards and individual or more than one person. There is also bullying through communication and information technologies known popularly as cyber bullying. Bullying can embroil intimidation, humiliation, victimization, domination, and all other forms of harassment based on race, disability, sex, homosexuality or transgender (Bazelon, 2013). This vice has long term effects on persons involved. The essay seeks to illustrate how to curb bullying in schools.
Schools in the same locality need to have a clear and shared definition of what bullying is. Some students do not understand or know whether they are being bullied. A precise definition of this vice will give them a clear understanding of what is happening around them. They will be able to report such cases to the authorities, and the necessary steps can be taken to act on the situation. The staff also need to be competent on ways of eliminating this problem (Ferguson, 2013). For them to have a good understanding of how to handle this issue when it arises will go a long way in plummeting this crime.
Teachers and staff need not to brand a child a bully. Placing judgment on a child affects him or her a great deal. When addressing learner’s behavior, one needs to be non-judgmental (Frankel & Heaphy, 2012). Teachers and staff need to find first what happened and decide whether or not the instance qualifies as bullying. Teachers need to look into specific behaviors as this is paramount. Students come from different backgrounds. Those bullying other students need to know what their actions are doing to other students.
