A Man Said to the Universe
Man announces to the universe that he exists so that he can be acknowledged, in order to feel that his presence is accepted, that he has significance in the grand scheme of things. It is not enough for the man to regard his life to and for himself. He is seeking recognition, at least to be approved by the universe around him.
Pride
The poem shows the man’s self-importance to the universe. Man is saying “Sir I exist” which is his way of indicating to the universe that it should notice him and his needs (Crane, 2014). The makes the reader to understand that man thinks he is the most important object on the universe. Crane uses exclamation points at the end of man’s statement “Sir I exist!” to emphasize the pride that he feels in being the control center of the universe.
The image is created in the mind of the audience how man prideful man is when he interjects the announcement to the great universe as he goes through life. The poem shows that although man thinks he is the pinnacle species of the universe his folly lies in the pride and yet he had nothing to do with achieving that status.
Fear
The dialog is initiated by man with the honorific title sir. Man is asserting his existence because the universe is ignoring him. This is an indication of the fear, wonder and respect that man feels towards the universe. Man is scared that ...
