Education is a very important entity. This involves the gaining of knowledge, skills, values, attitudes which result in a change of behaviors (Todaro & Smith, 2011). Recidivism is the tendency of a convicted person to re-offend. Once a prisoner has served a jail term, there is a need for successful reintegration into the society and to secure employment. The purpose of education is to transform individuals into useful members of society. To reduce recidivism, prisoners should be given an alternative to crime when they are released back into society (Farley & Pike, 2016). Education is part of this strategy as it enhances the opportunity to choose a real alternative to crime and thus successful society reintegration by the released prisoner. This essay will discuss the provision of free college education to prisoners.
