Many students have taken the Chinese language as a second language for various reasons. For instant many students study the language due to its fascinating characters. Actually the Chinese characters’ design is not only a writing system but has also been perceived as an art form which captures the imagination of the people who learn it. Learning to write and read Chinese requires patience, perseverance, discipline and time since it is a hard task (Everson, 2008). In this paper I discuss the application of pedagogical principles as well as evaluating the effectiveness of applying creative and innovative approaches in teaching Chinese language as a second language.
There are several basic pedagogical principles essential in teaching Chinese as a second language. The principle of succinct and multiple practices require that learners learn to speak refined and concise language while exercising severally the writing and verbal communication skills. The ratio of time taken in language listening, speaking and reading to that of practice should be generally not less than 1:5. There is also the principle of motivation which ensures success in the acquisition of Chinese as a second language.
