Often, teaching and learning appear to be practically similar but may vary in their contextual applications and meaning. From a biblical point of view, teaching and learning are both embodied in the works of Jesus and St. Paul who apply various teaching methods to minister the gospel (Hatch, 2014). Biblical educational practices can be compared and contrasted with present philosophical teaching practices to help bring out the meaning of practical teaching and learning. To some point, the teachings of both Jesus and Paul align with the current teaching and learning methods.
Teaching entails imparting knowledge to learners to facilitate a positive change in their behaviours to achieve a desirable predetermined outcome. A teacher teaches students to achieve a stated goal. Learning involves acquiring skills and mastering them to facilitate a positive behaviour change. A person receiving the skills is the learner, and the person giving out the knowledge is the teacher. As a teacher, Jesus used various teaching methods to teach his learners and followers who were his disciples and the general public. He was an authoritative teacher who used such teaching methods as storytelling, use of parables, teaching by his authority, use of hyperbole, memorable sayings, asking questions, use of visual illustrations, repetition, creating an experience, practicing, humour, use of object lessons, use of dialogues, use of direct comparisons, poetry, use of puns and deep discussions with his learners. Jesus possessed such robust dispositions as authority, power and influence over his students. He assessed their understanding of his teachings mainly by asking questions.
The Apostle Paul is also a good teacher from the biblical context. His teaching methods typically align with present-day teaching methods. He used such teaching methods as the creation of experience, practicing, illustration, repetition, objective lessons, comparisons, use of questions, sayings, metaphors, humour, parables, use of quotes from scripture, discussion with his learners, provision of feedback, demonstration to learners, interactive learning, and use of puns. He possessed robust dispositions like power and infl
