A Good Man Is Hard To Find
Different people have different definitions of what a good man is. This is because of the different points of view about what is good and what is not. What may be good from one person’s point of view may not be good from another person’s point of view (Pruzan, 2009). What makes a person good to another person may not necessarily make him or her good to other people. In the short story, “A Good Man Is Hard to Find” the author uses the various characters to develop the main theme of the story, which revolves around the elusive definition of a good man. The author uses his characters to depict good characters who turn out not to be as good as the reader may have thought.
The grandmother, who is the main character in the story, depicts the difficulties that arise in defining a good man. In the story, she argues that people were better behaved in the past and complains about the behavior of everybody she meets. The grandmother argues that children were more respectful during her days. Further, the grandmother thinks that people behaved right in the past (O’Connor, 1955). These arguments show that the grandmother disapproves the children’s behavior and thinks that they are disrespectful of their native states. The arguments also indicate that the grandmother thinks that people are untrustworthy and disrespectful to both the old and their native states.
