The primay purpose of the paper was to discuss the issue of national identity as it relates to the survival of the U.S. The paper held that national identity has a great significance in the survival of American based on three supporting points. First, it was noted that a national identy contributes to cohesion within and between the different racial and ethnic groups that form the U.S. Secondly, America and the world at large faces the threat of security, therefore, a national identity creates a common purpose to ensure that all americans are safe. The third point is that a national identity cultivates patriortism, which enhances the social and political health of America. A conter argument of the thre point hinded at the need to review the meaning and importance of national identity based on the many issues of injustices that exist in the country despite the continued procalamation of a national identity.
