Hamlet Act 1: Literary Analysis
A ghost arrives in the shape of King Hamlet, requesting that his son, Prince Hamlet, seek vengeance for his death. The ghost tells Hamlet that when he was sleeping in his garden, a villain poured poison into his ear, the same villain who now wears his crown. Hamlet’s worst fears about his uncle are confirmed. “O my prophetic soul!” he cries (I.v.40). King Hamlet was assassinated by his own brother, Claudius, according to the ghost. Claudius, on the other hand, is now married to the mother of Prince Hamlet. The ghost urges Hamlet to pursue vengeance, warning him that Claudius has tainted Denmark and Gertrude, having snatched her from her first marriage and captivated her in the filthy desire of their unholy relationship. The ghost disappears and Hamlet promises to remember and obey the ghost.
