Troubling One of Adichie’s Own Single Stories

It is not a controversial statement to say, like Adichie, "Hearing a single story about a country or a person we risk misunderstanding critically." An example is Fidel's story where poverty was her single story to him since she was told nothing else but how poor his family was, to the extent that nobody in his family could make anything. In my perspective, her giving this story provokes one to think more about a particular country and person. However, she has given a transphobic comment against all transgender women saying, "Transwomen could not be women because prior to switching genders they had experienced the male privilege." In the author's perspective, she viewed transwomen as not real women.
After reading the article, I was very intrigued because transgender women as not being real are how society views them, making her statement painfully relatable. Many people do not look at issues such as violence and oppression that many trans–women face. Thus, Adichie participates in erasing these issues saying, "Taking about women’s issues it is not a good thing to include trans-women’s issues." And like the author says, "Those who are not trans-gender need to listen to trans-people before they talk about and speak for them."
The question, however, is whether this statement changes how you think about Adichie's talk? In my perspective, this statement does not change how I think about her speech since a single story is reflected. For this reason, it shows how people think that trans-women experience the privileges of being a man even after switching genders. Thus, that's why people like Raquel Willis responded to her saying, "She needs to take a lesson from herself on the danger of a single story because she has just shown how dangerous cisgender hegemony is."
