Introduction
There are a number of factors that play part in the poor socialization habits that are seen in Alana’s life. These conditions call for measures by all the stakeholders around the girl to make her live a normal life and grow up to be a sociable member of the society.
Alana’s Case Analysis
To begin with, some of the reasons are domestic in nature. Given that she does not experience full parental care and guidance like children ought to, she is haunted by the divorce of her parents. Without full parental care and support, she does her activities at her own will and does not come to appreciate the need to socialize with the other children.
Alana is also suffering the effects of premature birth and slow development both physically and psychologically. From the information that is provided by the nurse regarding her health condition, it is clear that either or both of Alana’s parents are alcoholics. The effects are so much pronounced in the 10 year-old girl to the extent of affecting her health condition. This has interfered with her earlier on learning processes. For example, she often drops out of school and reports back.
There is little concern about how Alana and the other cousins she puts up with consider life or education important. As the kids report, there is hardly an adult back at home to do the supervisory work as a genuine parent or guardian. Alana feels separated from the other kids since she is always regarded as the youngest and smallest among all of them, even if there are younger ones in the vicinity.
For these reasons, Alana has a low liking for her peers and finds it challenging to freely interacting with them. She often plays alone or spends part of her time with her elders, like in the case of holding the teacher on duty’s hands. Alana’s mother has little time to watch over the girl. In most instances, it is the cousins that come at night to spend time with her and watch over her while the mother leaves at night. Even at day time, the mother is hardly around to socialize with the little girl. According to what her cousins reported, it is nearly impossible to find the mother at home since they conclude that there is no adult to be there in such cases as those of school and general care and bringing up. There is no denial of the fact that Alana has several challenges that can purely be blamed on her parents.
It is not too late, however, to help Alana learn to socialize with her age mates. There are strategies that can be used both at home and at school to boost her socialization skills with her peers. There are several activities that children take part in at school. Other than playing, activities such as singing and turn-taking are some instances where children get to boost their socialization abilities (Miller, 2013). Teachers can take the initiative to ensure that Alana belongs to at least one of these groups. This could make her freely interact with her peers who belong to these same groups.
The perception of the other children towards Alana ought to be changed. Perhaps she often feels looked down upon and unfit for the peer groups. Since all the other children treat her as the youngest all seasons, her mentality is mainly on the fact that she is too young to socialize with her ‘elders.’ The teachers should often give public recognition to Alana to make her feel part of the community which she belongs. This would steer up her self-esteem and encourage her to interact with other members of the school.
At home, there is a challenge that the teachers have to solve. Alana’s mother needs to be close to the girl. In spite of her frequent absence in the house, the teachers can create time to visit the home frequently and explain to her the value in spending some of her time with the little girl. Alana is only 10 and this means there are several things that can be changed in her life. The parent can be encouraged to take part in games with the daughter. Such games include turn-taking and encouraging the overall development of the brain capacity and socialization skills of the girl. The mother can be of the greatest help to the little girl.
Finally, regular medical check-up and counseling sessions can be organized with Alana. As the nurse reported earlier on, the girl has growth challenges as a result of the parents’ alcoholic nature. This means that the impacts are still in the girl and should be closely monitored and medical solutions provided regularly. Though she is still young, special counseling sessions can be organized. These should involve some of her age mates to explain to her the value in having close friends and socializing with them. This counseling session should be interactive to encourage her participation.
In the event that such measures are not taken into account, the future life of Alana could be impacted on negatively. In her future career, she may not be in a position to interact with the work associates or take part in open forums. The overall social...
