Adjustment Issues
These are issues which happen when an individual becomes unable to cope with or adjust to a given stressor, for instance, a major event in life or a given all new environment (Ballard & Clanchy, 2007). Persons who seem to struggle with such issues tend to have the symptoms shown by depressed people. These symptoms include frequent crying, general interest loss and the feeling of hopelessness. Major academic issues faced by international students include the proficiency of English language, understanding the various lectures, class discussion participations and preparing for oral and written reports (Biggs, 2013). The social adjustment issues usually linked to international students include the social customs of America, and the making of friends. Also included under the social adjustment issues is seeking acceptance by the various social groups and when establishing a relationship with someone of the opposite sex.
Among the strategies and services that international students use to cope with such issues include; language instruction, orientation programs, counselling, host family and study partner programs. With regard to English instruction, institutions offer special courses taken in English as a foreign or second language. Concerning orientation programs, it is done putting into consideration that the American culture becomes pretty much pointed out including their higher education system, immigration regulations and the educational and living expenses (Gebhard, 2010). As of counselling, students who feel stressed in a way seek for advice from their foreign advisor or the few friends they might have made. Some foreign students become attached to a host family that slowly helps them to learn and cope to the American culture. Lastly mentioned is the study partner, where a foreign student identifies with an American student that will help him or her in their study activities (Isibor, University of North Carolina at Charlotte., & University of North Carolina at Charlotte. 2008). After settling in to these issues, most international students always come out successful. Having been chosen as the best students in their countries they always do their best to live to those expectations.
Issues to be addressed by Students
The responsibility of tackling social adjustment issues rests largely on the students. Students have the average or more skills to make, as well as keep friends. When communicating with professionals or peers, as a student one somehow finds the right tone. As such students seem aware of the expectations vested on them by the university educators and administrators, they try to make themselves comfortable to meet such expectations (Gebhard, 2010). Moreover, the international students stand responsible to ensure a follow-up on every help the institution or peers are trying to accord them as far as academic adjustment issues are concerned. A student needs to know where support can be found, both on campus, as well as off campus. They have to utilize and trust the available resources and be able and willing to cope to the provided coping strategies (Biggs, 2013). One needs to accept the challenging experience of a student, even if they sometimes become uncertain, rough and demanding.
Issues to be addressed by the Universities
A large responsibility concerning academic adjustment issues rests with the universities. Universities’ staff are well trained as far as communications skills is concerned. They are as well caring and passionate enough to walk that extra mile when required to. The leadership in these universities tend to embrace inclusion and multiculturalism. This is with the effort of trying to create a studying environment that allows the universities to accomm...
