1. Are we still a Democracy? Or are the rich dominating the American Political Process? Do poor Americans have a say in the political process or do we have an elite system where the rich only benefit from the system? I will love to hear your comments
The United States is a representative democracy, which is a type of democracy. The countries decisions are made mainly by the majority vote while some are made on the local or the state levels. However, only a tiny fraction of the laws are made at state or local levels. The people’s vote is used to determine the leader, and these leaders bear the responsibility of making laws on behalf of the citizens.
Under the Economic-Elite Domination theory, there have been arguments that the U.S policies are made by people who have substantial economic resources. For instance, individuals who earn substantially high incomes have a high advantage when it comes to elections than the people who are economically power or earn low incomes (Root & Kennedy, 2018).
The poor Americans do have a share when it comes to making political processes or decisions in the country. Even if the elites control considerably large political processes, the poor have their say too. When referring to the Majoritarian Electoral Democracy theory, the U.S. government policies are majorly made with respect to the collective will of the average citizens. The poor and average citizens take part in voting the leaders through democratic elections. There have not been cases of economic discrimination when it comes to the issue of citizens electing their leaders during the elections (Chemerinsky, 2020).
