Essay on Beowulf
Beowulf is an epic poem based on a legend that fought several wars to teach different values of culture to his society. He has qualities such as Bravery, forte, faithfulness, reputation gained through glorious performances, and the wish to contest evil CITATION Bak00 \l 1033 (Baker, 2000). Beowulf was one of the best and strongest warriors of his time. After slaying monster Grendel and Grendel’s Mother, he was entitled as the king CITATION Bjo97 \l 1033 (Bjork, 1997). Heroes of modern age are found as social workers, soldiers, political leaders, followers and keepers of laws. In fact, everyone who is residing in a society, maintains his/her own culture and the dignity of country alongside; can be considered as hero of modern age CITATION Gol72 \l 1033 (E., 1972). On the other hand, the resources of evils have also been replaced from monsters by dark affairs such as political corruption, greed for bribe, envy, etc.
Epic legends have qualities which are unparalleled from ordinary human beings. Knowledge and a driving longing to discover achievement CITATION Ear94 \l 1033 (Earl, 1994) are the basis qualities of the epic legends. An epic hero always fights for the good of the people and knocks out evils from the society to maintain the balance. An epic hero is identified by his qualities and the works he has done for the betterment of society and so the people CITATION Nap05 \l 1033 (Napierkowski, 2005). Beowulf’s courageous qualities were bravery, steadfastness, insight, bragging, and fearlessness; which made him an epic hero.
Act of understanding the importance of Beowulf's character obliges a comprehension of some key figures within epic ballad CITATION Rog70 \l 1033 (Rollin, 1970). Beowulf helped Hrothgar, who was the King of Danes. According to the poem, Grendel who is a powerful creature, attacks Hrothgar's kingdom along with his mother. Beowulf courageously killed Grendel and then killed Grendel’s mother CITATION Rog70 \l 1033 (Rollin, 1970). Beowulf was once again victorious in a fight against evil and later came back to his home land; Geatland. Valor permitted Beowulf to confront the followers of evil and gave him popularity all over the kingdom CITATION Sta05 \l 1033 (Stanley, 2005).
Centralization of character made in poem of Beowulf
The topic permits us to sense the character and his world more profoundly. In Beowulf, the qualities and inspirations of the legendry character are mirrored in a conceptual way. The character, ‘Beowulf’ is characterized on loyalty, reputation and generosity. Often, within various epic poems, the story centralizes on a legendry character; same has been focused in this too. This essay extracts out an explanation and comparison of bravery between epic heroes, Beowulf and modern day heroes; where I considered military soldier as real life heroes. According to the poem, Beowulf was a brave man who was the king of Danes; he beheaded several enemies and dragons to conquer evil powers. Beowulf fought to maintain peace and prosperity among beloved people of his place. He was awarded true respect by his people, because of his daring acts of fighting against all threatening evils. Beowulf was one such epic legend who fought for a good cause, gave protection to people and lived wisely CITATION Tah14 \l 1033 (Tahmina Akhter, 2014).
Comparison between Epic Legend Beowulf and Modern Age Real Hero
I personally think, a soldier possess same qualities, that can be seen in brave Beowulf. A soldier is fearless and destroys his enemy who put any step against his or her people. A soldier always actively seeks to destroy his enemies who promote evil, suffering and fear among people CITATION Bjo97 \l 1033 (Bjork, 1997). A soldier promotes goodness and saves people from such sufferings. He also involves himself in act of violence by fighting with enemies, just to bring non-violence and peace for his countrymen. Ultimately, a soldier conveys his or her people to live peacefully with no evil and fear all around CITATION Rog70 \l 1033 (Rollin, 1970).
There have always been rewards received by each of these epic and modern legends. As the poem narrates; once Beowulf had a fight with giant monsters, he successfully defeated them and thereby demolished them all CITATION Rog70 \l 1033 (Rollin, 1970).
