Virginia A. Henderson made major contributions to nursing as a practice. She developed the theory that nursing should focus on increasing patient’s independence and accelerating their recovery by assisting them meet their basic needs. According to Henderson, human health needs are not only physical but also psychological, spiritual, and social. She defined 14 components of health needs: Normal breath, adequate diet, proper excretion, desirable body motion and postures, normal temperature, adequate sleep and rest, suitable clothes, cleanliness, safety, communication, worship, work, play and learning (Watkins, 1996).
