Why College Education Should Be Free
The cost of education has continued to rise with a decrease in the support that students get from the federal grants. Today the federal support for higher education accounts for about a third of the total fees that a student is supposed to pay for their tuition. This has seen many students drop out of school or chose to study part-time so that they can work and get money to pay for their school fees. However, a college education should be free because of the taxpayer, the workforce and the changing economy.
According to the taxpayer, education falls under the category of public goods. These are goods that are paid for by the people, and everyone has a right to utilize them including those who did not pay for them. Everyone in society should enjoy the benefits that result from such goods in society. For example, when people pay taxes to have their houses protected from fire, it means that every home in the area will be protected because it is a public service. Consequently, college education should be funded by the money that taxpayers pay in the form of taxes and this should mean that students should study without the tuition fees.
