Article Review: Research Dealing with Children.
According to mental health experts, there is no simple explanation as to what drives a person to commit suicide. The rate on suicides has skyrocketed, according to the American center of disease control (CDC), the rate of suicides across the globe rose by a staggering fifty-six percent between 2007 and 2017. It is an alarming situation considering that mental health experts have little to offer in terms of an explanation of the astounding revelation. Psychologist argued that many complex issues are going on in society that contributes to suicide. According to research, suicidal thoughts and ideation are common among adolescents. Distinguishing between those with suicidal ideation and attempts will help improve risk assessment and improve intervention efforts.
The research conducted by Mars et al. (2019), aims to answer a question that has long been lingering in mental health professionals. Risk assessment and protective factors in adolescent psychiatric health have long been established, but little research has been conducted into differentiating between adolescents that only thing about suicide and those who are likely to attempt suicide. According to previous research into the topic, only one-third of adolescents who experience suicidal ideation attempt suicide. The above hypothesis is tested in a longitudinal study.
In the study, the authors have selected a population-based cohort. The population consists of four thousand, seven hundred, and seventy-two members of the Avon longitudinal study of parents and children (ALSPAC). The study is administered to children of an average age of sixteen years. The research methodology involved administering a self-report questionnaire. The result of the questionnaire was analyzed on a multinomial regression scheme to differentiate the adolescents into three groups i.e. no suicidal ideation or attempts, suicidal ideation only, and finally suicidal ideation and attempts CITATION Bec19 \l 1033 (Mars, et al., 2019).
The original regression analysis did not support the hypothesis. After further adjustments to conditions that influence suicidal thoughts, for example, prior exposure to self-harm, accessibility of lethal means, among others, the data in the experiment supported the original hypothesis of the research. One of the limitations of the study is that it fails to incomplete other risk factors (gender dissociation, lower IQ, higher intensity, etc.) that influence suicide in adolescents CITATION Bec19 \l 1033 (Mars, et al., 2019). Future research aims to connect the risk factors and adolescent suicide to distinguish adolescent suicidal thoughts from those who have attempted suicide.
The methodology of the study takes an extensive look into the history of the child's suicidal ideation and attempts before the study. The questionnaire also takes into account other risk factors that influence ideation into an attempt. The average age of the sample is sixteen years. The authors represent the data gathered during the study in a table format detailing the risk factor investigated, the age of the participant, the measure used to collect the data, the rater and some additional information that influenced the choice of the rater CITATION Bec19 \l 1033 (Mars, et al., 2019). Although an extensive data gathering approach was taken during the study, the authors failed to capture the role of gender other gender-based risk factors in the study. As such, the result of the study fails to address the role of gender-based risk factors in adolescent suicides.
The authors use proven data gathering and analysis techniques. A cohort population sample is used in the study to ensure that the results are not skewed by unnormalizes in the data. Multinomial regression was used to examine the associations between factors that differentiate adolescents. Furthermore, the authors adjusted the results of the multinomial regression analysis to account for other factors that influence ideation into an attempt. The above measures are established techniques of conducting empirical research in various fields including psychiatric and mental health studies.
The authors identified some of the confounding variables to the research and made the required adjust men to avoid skewed results. Two confounding variables were identified; socioeconomic position and gender. Socioeconomic position was evaluated n a material-based questionnaire that included an average weekly household disposable income recorded at age three and four-years-old divided into quintiles and rescaled to account for the family size, composition, and estimated housing benefits CITATION Bec19 \l 1033 (Mars, et al., 2019). the second evaluation criterion for the socioeconomic position was a social class that dealt with profession/ highest paternal and maternal social class during the up bring of the adolescent. Finally, the socioeconomic position was evaluated on the highest maternal education attainment. The research did not address gender as a potential confounding factor as their research aim was to investigate possible differences in risk factors for suicidal ideation and attempts.
The conclusion of the research i
