Analyze the Facebook scandal by applying and incorporating the following pieces of course material (the assigned
readings are available through the course Moodle or the course kit):
 Relevant lecture material that has already been covered before the strike. I’ve uploaded my lecture slides for
data doubles and dataveillance (lecture 8) to the course Moodle as well.
 Amoore, Louise and Marieke De Goede. (2005) Governance, risk and dataveillance in the War on
Terror. Crime, law and social change, 43(2), 149-173.
 Haggerty, Kevin D. and Richard V. Ericson. (2000) The surveillant assemblage. The British journal of
sociology, 51(4), 605-622.
 Yar, Majid. (2005) The novelty of ‘cybercrime’: An assessment in light of routine activity theory. European
journal of criminology, 2(4), 407-427.
 Recommended for background on Big Data: Lyon, David. (2014) Surveillance, Snowden, and big data:
Capacities, consequences, critique. Big Data & Society, 1(2). I’ve also added this to the course Moodle.

When applying the concepts and ideas raised in the course material, consider the following questions:
 Has a cybercrime been committed? If so, what is the nature of the crime? How can we understand the crime
in relation to Routine Activities Theory (RAT)? Is RAT an appropriate criminological theory for applying to the
Facebook-Cambridge Analytica case study?
 How should we understand data theft? Apply the concepts of data double, surveillant assemblage, Big Data,
and dataveillance to the case study.
 How do the concepts of risk and risk management inform this case study?

The Facebook-Cambridge Analytica Case Study
Name
University
Introduction
The privacy of social media users has become a major issue that troubles not just social media users but also policymakers. Generally speaking, the privacy of social media users is threatened by a lack of proper measures to protect big data. They are also faced with the problem and threats of cybercriminals who are prowling the Internet to steal data and compromise the security and privacy of individuals and organizations. In this paper, the Facebook-Cambridge Analytica case study is analyzed to illustrate how Cambridge Analytica committed a crime by harvesting the personal data of more than 87 million Facebook users. In the analysis, the writer will try to illustrate that the organization committed cybercrime, how the crime committed by the organization can be understood through the Routine Activities Theory (RTA), how the crime committed by the organization can be used to understand data theft, and how the concepts of risk and risk management inform the nature of this case study. The paper is divided into three major sections, including cybercrime and criminological theory, data theft and related concepts, and risk and risk management.
