Julia is a 17-year-old teenager who spends too much time using her phone. Even though most teenagers her age spend a significant amount of their time using smart phones, Julia’s habit has not only affected her sleeping patterns, but also her academic performance, health, and social life. Despite her obvious issues, Julia still does not believe that she has a problem and has not taken any action to address this behavior. She previously claimed that she can reduce the hours spent on her smartphone after complains by her family, teachers, and peers. However, this has not been the case, resulting in the referral for professional health.

Behavior Description
Julia spends excessive amount of time on her cell phone, a fact that has affected all the other facets of her life. Her excessive mobile phone usage includes several addicting behaviors including taking selfies, editing her pictures and videos, chatting, browsing through social media platforms, and watching movie. The cumulative time spent completing all these activities results in an abnormal use of smartphone use. Her behavior has affected her social and academic life negatively. However, when she is confined, she is adamant that her smart phone use is under control and her behavior is typical among her age mates. Nevertheless, she exhibits several physical symptoms that point directly or indirectly to excessive phone use. For example, she is always tired from going to bed late. She also experiences frequent headaches and eye problems as a result of staring on her bright screen for hours. Her eating habits have also been affected since she is always in a hurry to leave the dinner table or pays little attention to her food since she is more interested on what is happening on social media. Julia has also become estranged from her friends and family due to her cell phone activities. She does not put any effort in maintaining her physical relationships and believes that her virtual friends constitute a healthy and thriving social life. She also gets into trouble in school for using her phone during class hours and puts little effort in her assignments and extracurricular activities, causing her academic performance to suffer considerably.
