Climate change and its effects on aquatic resources
Climate change has been known to impact on water resources through the buildup of greenhouse gases (GHGs) in the atmosphere. These gases include Methane, Nitrous Oxide, and Carbon dioxide. Most of the impact of climate change on aquatic resources is felt through the changing of weather patterns that affect the availability of water; glaciers are shrinking and the changes in patterns of precipitation, therefore, increasing the instances of floods and droughts. This calls for the need for businesses to address the impacts of climate change on water resources as it affects all sectors of society, for instance, government agencies that deal with water, farmers, and also residential water users.
How does climate change impact water resources?
Through precipitation shifts, for instance, drought and floods. The disruption of the water cycle, as well as precipitation through climate change, impacts the amount of water levels, reducing them significantly. Higher average temperatures are relatively warmer and cannot hold enough water, therefore, leading to dry spells that are interchanged with heavy precipitation that could cause flooding. The anthropogenic factors that cause climate change and global warming are deforestation and air pollution from industries. Geography also contributes to floods; however, climate change can lead to the turn of events. Temperature rise contributes to high rates of evaporation as well as plant transpiration that leads to high loss of water in soil and plants. Extreme precipitation, on the other hand, leads to losses of life, economic damage as well as damaged infrastructure.
