Iran’s Nuclear Program Should be ALLOWED to Continue
In the past few years, there has been a heated debate over the best way for the UN and the United States to react to Iran's quest for nuclear activities. As the debate continues, America continues tightening its already tough sanctions against the country, while some European countries have placed an embargo on Iranian oil. Even though the UN, the EU, United States, and Iran recently resumed negotiations on the issue, a profound sense of crisis still hangs over the process. Most policymakers and commentators posit that a nuclear-armed Iran presages the worst possible consequence of the current impasse. This paper argues that, as a matter of fact, allowing Iran to continue with its nuclear pursuit would possibly be the best outcome: the one that would probably stabilize the Middle East.
According to Samore (2013), the current crisis regarding Iran's nuclear ambition can only end in three different outcomes. First, serious sanctions coupled with diplomacy could convince the country’s leadership to abandon its quest for a nuclear weapon. However, this conclusion can never happen: history has proven that a nation determined to acquire nuclear weapons will rarely be deterred from doing so. Punishing a country by imposing harsh economic sanctions hardly, in most cases, disrupt its nuclear program. For instance, North Korea has managed to acquire and test nuclear weapons despite numerous resolutions and sanctions from the UN. Tehran is determined that its security and development is pegged on its possession of nuclear weapons, and sanctions are, therefore, unlikely to change its mind. In fact, Samore (2013) argues that putting more sanctions on Iran will only make the country feel more vulnerable and strengthen its resolve to get the ultimate deterrent to such threats; the nuclear weapon.
