In this week's readings, First Break all the Rules share the results of a huge research of managers from different companies and industries in order to explore the challenge of selecting, keeping, and evaluating employee satisfaction, which is essential to employee productivity. Their work emphasize different qualities and behaviors that great managers seem to demonstrate. The authors also describe management processes and behaviors that help bring out the best in their employees.
First Break all the Rules text used the analogy of mountain climbing to describe the role of a manager who is successful. They describe it as a psychological climb. The closer one gets to the mountain, so the perspective of the mountain or the role begins to change.
Some key ideas from the text include:
The best managers reject conventional wisdom.
The best managers treat every employee as an individual.
The best managers never try to fix weaknesses; instead they focus on strengths and talent.
The best managers know they are on stage everyday. They know their people are watching every move they make.
Measuring employee satisfaction is vital information for your investors.
People leave their immediate managers, not the companies they work for.
The best managers are those that build a work environment where the employees answer positively to 12 Questions
The text notes also that companies that reflect positive responses to the 12 questions in the text, profited more, were more productive, retained more employees per year, and satisfied more customers - the four criteria for successful businesses. The authors also found that without satisfying an employee's basic needs first, a manager can never expect the employee to give stellar performance. 1 The Lessons from Gallup Research About Creating and Maintaining a Productive Work Environment
The Gallup Research entails several teachings, the first being the need to create a culture of productivity. According to the scholarly source, managers need to encourage employees to do the best they can for their organization to run smoothly. One of the best approaches of doing this is by communicating the organizational goal to all the team members (Buckingham & Coffman, 2014). For this to happen, Gallup mentions that it is okay to assign each member a specific purpose because this is the only way that an employee would know what is expected of him/ her from the organization. From the readings, it is evident that business managers have a task to play in ensuring that all the organizational goals are subdivided to the employees in equal proportions and that each employee contributes towards achieving the bigger goals. Productivity culture is, therefore, a crucial element in a business.
Gallup also teaches on the need to have calendar management, which guides all the employees on time used and the approaching deadlines to follow. According to the scholarly source, most employees are most likely to produce better results when they are timed. The management calendar also guides the employers to focus on things that matter in that particular time, and leave the rest for another day (Buckingham & Coffman, 2014). In a productive working environment, both employees and employers meet the deadlines. Therefore, instead of focusing on a task for so long, employees are expected to do more jobs and meet the new deadlines efficiently. According to Gallup, employees are paid for the time they spend in the workplace and their expertise in the same field. Therefore, it is upon the managers to adopt calendar management to help the employees maximize their work.
