Millions of people across the world are today connected as result of the advancement in technology that has seen the invention of computers and the internet that has made the world to look like a village. A lot of benefits have been realized as a result of the invention of the computer more especially the internet which today can be equated to the air that people breathe or rather water; it has become life. But as they also say, no good thing doesn’t have its bad side. The computers through the internet have given birth to cybercrime which has off late become one of the most complicated crimes to deal with since those involved in it are intelligent individuals who cover their steps well thus making it difficult for them to be caught. But as much as it has become a menace that is hard to deal with, there have been steps that have been made towards curbing it. For instance, there has been the development of computer forensic field which helps in the prosecution of cybercrime cases. And since technology also keeps on advancing every day, continuance survey by the Computer Security Institute (CSI) has always been carried out to help the authorities stay put with the new developments in the market. Thus, as far as this paper is concerned, it will focus on the 2010/2011 computer crime and security survey.
For clarity, it was the 15th time that this CSI survey was taking place and it was focused on a new topic based on the evolution of the technology world. As far as the respondents are concerned, the survey was sent to 5412 security practitioners through email or post.
