Ethical issues at Bryson Cable
Fundamental Issues
Integrity and trust are the most essential ethical issues that businesses must face today. A basic understanding of integrity includes the idea of conducting your business affairs with honesty and a commitment to treating every customer fairly. Jane Conway, the customer’s source inspector, should have passed those defective cables based on Bryson’s test data. She had a very crucial and responsible position, and her decision of passing or rejecting defective cables could help stop a potential disaster. However, by not performing her own test to evaluate whether the cables were defective or not, exhibits that it was easy for the corporation to use unethical ways to supply defective cables to their clients, which would only result in a disaster.
Conflict of interest
Stanton Wong, was instructed by Harry Jackson, the plant manager and vice president of operations, to unambiguously disregard defects in a batch of laminated cable they had produced for a major customer. He however wondered whether he should do something about it or not. This is therefore an ethical issue since it is a situation where an individual must choose whether to advance his or her own interests, or those of the organization or those of some other group. In this case the plant manager representing the organization.
Discrimination
Harry Jackson harassed many women in office and was having an affair with one of the sales account managers. Racial and sexual discrimination in the work place creates ethical issues within the business world.
Whether the company should or should not sell the faulty cables
After two out of ten samples of the cable failed the integrity tests, the company should not sell the faulty cable to the military. This is as will be explained using the following theories;
Deontology. Deontology holds dear the view that “equal respect must be given to all persons”. They argue that there are things we should not do even to maximize utility. This is shown in the situation where two faults were found during testing and should not be assumed. They should all be treated as not safe hence further testing for approval.
The Relativist Perspective. Relativism acknowledges that we live in a society in which people have many different views from which to justify a decision as right or wrong. It uses interacting group to determine probable solutions based on consensus. Since harry and Wong felt that the faulty cables should be assumed, he should seek further opinions since we live in a diverse society.
Utilitarianism. It is mainly concerned with consequences but seeks the greatest goods for the greatest number of people. They believe that they should make decisions that result in the greatest total utility that is, achieve the greatest benefit for all those affected by decision. This is seen where the company is concerned with the profit making rather than the overall good it could cause to the society at large.
