THE FALL OF JAPAN’S ELECTRONICS GIANTS
As per the year 1970 to 1980, japan was regarded as the leading producer of consumer electronics in the world. Bigger companies in japan such as Sharp, Panasonic, Sony and Toshiba were trend setters in producing domestic electronics. However, in recent times, this trend has changed. Giant companies such as Samsung and Apple have taken over the production of consumer electronics (Birtle, 2011).
Among the factors that led to the failure of the Japanese electronics companies is lack of flexibility to adjust to new technology and poor decision making. The global technology changed rapidly this forcing the electronic world to adapt the new system as well. Companies like Apple and Samsung made instant adaptations to the new technologies immediately they came into place. The technological changes also resulted in the changes in the desires of the consumer in terms of electronics needs. The modern world technology is all about internet, online services and sophisticated software that are easy to use as they are consumer friendly (Birtle, 2011). Most Japanese Electronics Company’s strength was on the electronic hardware, which could not provide consumers options that the new software provide. Basing on this reason, most clients opted for the new electronics by Samsung and Apple that have modern software and easy to use.
Most Japanese electronics companies were producers of television, memory chips, cameras and video recorders. These products by Japanese electronics companies transformed the world in the process shaping Japan as a world leading electronics country. Companies such as Samsung and Apple came up with modernized products from flat screens, IPad, and smartphones. Japan companies were too confident with their products quality and demands that they never bothered to keep up with the competition from international companies. Individuals preferred the new electronics products by Apple and Samsung to the old products by the Japanese companies hence resulting to the slow failure in these companies.
Japanese weak marketing strategies and management as compared to the international counterpart played a significant part in the failures of these companies. A good example is the stage where the Sony Company invented the new product, the LCD televisions in 2004 that could have been very successful. Sony as a leading electronics company in Japan failed to market and protect this product to the international consumers to raise its demand. Samsung Company came up with this similar idea and named their television LED and invested a lot in its marketing and promotion making it recognized in the all world. Many consumers thus opted for the Samsung Television rather than the LCD TV from Sony.
External factors such as strengthening the Japanese currency played a bigger role in failure of the Japanese electronics companies. These move had a bad influence on the importation and exportation operation of these electronics companies in Japan. The cost of the Japanese electronics products increased making the international clients to opt for other options which were apple and Samsung products.
The failure of the Japanese electronics companies in all those criteria’s as well as the foreign competition started to have a bad impact on the companies’ budget. The giants such as Sony, Panasonic and Sharp have financial difficulties nowadays and can’t afford to take risks. They have to minimize their cost for experiments and new innovation research in order to save the companies from going bankrupt.

One of the most important things in the modern world is smartphone technology. Smartphones are widely used by people all over the world and became an everyday device. Unfortunately, the biggest Japanese electronics companies didn’t pay big attention to this technology and missed the beginning of a new era of smartphones use.
Japanese companies are known for selling cameras and TVs. Smartphones took a huge part of the sales from these companies. Now people are using their smartphones to take pictures because it is easier and faster to share pictures online and send it to other devices. Also, the devices such as iPad and other tablets took some of the sales from TVs sector. All these factors led to losses for Japanese electronics companies and made their comeback even harder (Henrique Ogasavara, 2013).
Most of the Japanese companies missed on advancing to production of smartphones due to numerous factors. Their production was only focused in the Japanese domestic market. They produced smartphones that had features such as cameras, transport passes and digital money that could only be used in japan making all the benefits and innovations unknown to the international consumers. Their smartphones were network locked since they had no relationship with other international network operators hence could not be used in the global market.
Japanese smartphones are run by a different operating system as compared to iPhone. Apple Company introduced the iPhone which had more features that made it easy to use as compared to the phones by the Japanese companies (United States, 2013). The Samsung mobile phones had more features hence was preferred to the Japanese smartphones (Henrique Ogasavara, 2013).
As per this time, Major Japanese companies such as are trying to regain their business ability in the electronic market with the biggest part being the smartphone market. Sony and Panasonic companies have introduced new smartphones in the market to try and get their shares in the global smartphone market.
