Some families are composed and they handle their family issues so well while some are never able to handle issues. Family nursing is an important of nursing that requires all those who practice it to be conversant with the habits of individuals in a family. The way a family responds to issues as unit determines how that family will respond to any nursing problem in their family and even how they respond to both good and bad news if one individual in that family is sick. By watching and listening to individuals in a family, a nurse knows the right approach to take with any family. It is, however, hard to deal with family issues in a dysfunctional family. Madea’s family reunion, a 2006 film by Tyler Perry is used to depict a family and explore family nursing approaches in such family setting.
Madea’s Family Reunion
Madea is a tough grandmother who loves but quite harsh. She trots a pistol and does not care about what other people say about her. She has a runaway placed under her care and has love-troubled nurses who have come over to her place. Lisa and Venessa are in difficult times in their relationships but Madea ignores them due to her greed. During the planning of the reunion and the reunion itself, secrets come out which threaten to break the family up. Madea has to become in charge to restore order in her home. The cast of the movie is comprised of Tyler Perry, who wrote and directed the film, Blair Underwood, Lynn Whitfield, Boris Kodjoe, Henry Simmons, Lisa Arrindell Anderson, Maya Angelou, Rochelle Aytes, Jenifer Lewis, Tangi Miller, Keke Palmer and Cicely Tyson.
Lisa and Vanessa are two half sisters. Lisa is engaged to an investment banker who beats her, Vanessa does not see eye to eye with her mother. She has decided to focus on her kids and keep men at bay until she meets Frankie. The family lawyer Brian has had a runaway delinquent Nikki in the care of Madea who lives with her brother Joe. With Matriachs May and Myrtle in the reunion and secrets revealed, they have some words for the family.
Family Processes
Sociocultural- The setting is that of a traditional African American home where individuals were poor. There are those who have gone to cities and have acquired the status of their white counterparts. However, there are also those who live a typical life of poor African Americans of the current generation. Sex, alcohol and tense family issues dominate the film.
Environment-The African American family living in the suburbs in which the neighborhood is entirely black. It shows the divide between races in regards to resources and lifestyle.
Communication- slang and vulgarity dominates the play. There is, however, a show of respect when the elders are speaking. No matter how tensions are high, the respect helps cool down those involved.
