Personality Inventory
The Rotter Incomplete Sentences is a good technique in collection of information pertaining to an individual and which has great benefits in the realization of the counseling need that the client may have (Clark, 1995). The decision to take this route follows an obsession by a client to improve skills in writing and learn to speak fluent Spanish. The client has tried hard yet has not succeeded causing stress. It is clear from the responses that the client goal is to improve personal input in writing and Spanish.
A) Summary of Rotter Sentence Completion
The Rotter Sentence Completion gives surprise to many clients when they realize that it gives more about them than they knew. This test is just a series of simple questions but they tell so much about client personality especially the theme of self, family origin and general overview in life. Most of the information about client is one which the client cannot describe themselves with before they engage in the exercise. The main themes realized from the exercise are described below:-
I) View Of Self
The self dominates the responses in the sentence completion test. There are several examples which direct towards client learning and intensions to improve writing. These examples include “I study at the library”, “I want to know how to write well”, “In school I do my best to succeed” and, “reading is a good pass time” (DJ, 2015). All these details focus towards what the client believes in when it comes to learning and education. However, there are also others which reflect on personality of the client such as “I hate when I see people bullied”. It shows that the client has a kind heart towards other people, and is also outgoing (DJ, 2015). Looking through these sentences, the client completed in a way that was quite easy and clear. There are no retorts which are comical or boastfully. For instance, in the sentence, “I like driving” could have been completed in many ways including, “I like it when I am the centre of attraction”. That response, however, would show the responder as an individual who is arrogant, boastful and disgraceful. Some sentences are there to show the weaknesses while others show the strengths and successes of the responder. For instance, sentences such as, “I cannot understand Spanish as much as I speak it” and “I need to improve my Spanish” are there to show how the responder is struggling with Spanish even though he or she loves it (DJ, 2015). On one hand, it exposes those features in the lifestyle of the responder that they love but then cannot effectively handle. On the other hand, simple sentences tell my likes and dislikes and play a role in defining my personality. For example, the sentence, “I like driving”, show that the responder is a good driver because one cannot like something that they are not good at. The same applies to the sentence, “the happiest time is my birthday”. It is important to note that these completions for the sentences can end differently such as “I like my birthday” and “the happiest time is when am driving”, but the fact that those completions were specifically selected tells a lot about the responder me.
II) View of Others
In regards to other people, the responder seems to be very positive. In fact, in all the sentences completed about other people, only one had negative intonation. The sentence was, “people can be very phony” (DJ, 2015). It is, however, important to note that the sentence is completed in a way that gives a general overview about people and not targeted to specific individuals. Among those people who are targeted individually, the sentences were mostly competed in positive. For instance, the sentences, “most women are very intuitive”, “men are big sports fans”, “my father was the best dad one could ever have” all have positive intonations (DJ, 2015). However, it is notable that the responses have a sense of this theme because of the situations that the responder may have been through in life. The responder may say that mothers are protective because his or her mother exhibited that nature therefore the experience is what the responder transfers to paper when it comes to completing these sentences. The same applies to the case of a father. In matters of intuition among women, that could be perhaps because the responder is a woman or has spent more time with women and has seen their intuition.
III) View of Family Origin
Family origin seems to be quite positive. Although much has not been said, even someone who does not know the responder can tell from the sentences that the responder comes from a family which is close-knit. The sentence, “back home we have family gatherings” and “I love planning surprise parties for my family” all focus on the interaction of the family, and all is positive.
IV) General Themes
In this area, the responder is seen to be a dynamic person. The responder has indicated the things he or she likes and dislikes and, more importantly, the responder opens up to the world on different issues (DJ, 2015). The statements, “I hate bullying, I treat people well and I want to see people treated in a humane way all along” can ...
