Judgment is a trait humans have adopted since time immemorial. The ability to discriminate one particular thing from the other is an inborn ability we have to live with. Vision plays a significant role in establishments of judgment; which can either be negative or positive depending on personal opinion. The essay ‘Brown Study’ and ‘Mixed-blood stew’ by brings up how the perception of color influences the judgment of a person. I agree with the statement color colors thoughts.
Even before he establishes his basis in the brown study, the author gives us a contradictory setting. Sherlock Holmes retires to a ‘brown study’. His imagination picks up the word brown and pictures a room with brown wallpaper and the whole coffee making process. His literal imagination further strengthens the statements color colors thoughts (Rodriguez p.119). This, in turn, elicits the author to question himself. The fact that he has brown thoughts raises the question, is he brown enough?
Racism is also another factor that is created by ‘color colors thoughts.’ The essay mixed blood stew by brings out the negativities that were brought about by color. A mother refuses to recognize her son based on the fact that he was of white descent. She puts her son aside from her family by not including him in it (Rhodes p.384). A juror’s perception was put into light when trying an African American. The fact that the bank tellers stated that they had noticed a gold tooth had affected the final judgment of the juror. They are unconvinced and unmoved. He further says that most bookstores have replaced disciplinary categories with racial identifiers (Rodriguez p.121).The author then visualizes his life in which he feels should also be on one of the shelves. The fact that he is gay, a Catholic, an Indian Spaniard and lives in a Chinese city means he too should be identified by racial terms (Rodriguez p.122). Symbolisms were put in place thanks to color. Cancer, being a dangerous disease was called the white ghost. The term black, on the other hand, has been used to describe deaths.
Persecution based in color was prone. Slavery of African people was rampant in America. Kinships were created by the masters with their female slaves. This was a polite way of covering up rape and the children born as a result. The white masters considered the slaves as foolish and ignorant people. This did not put into consideration the thousands of African tribes in Africa. The color of the skin meant that their status as slaves was going to continue. The first drop of blood from an African American meant that they were signing a treaty to be slaves (Rhodes p.387). This was always going to be a white verse black affair. The fact that an African person, a Choctaw, Cherokee, and Anglo was a learned fellow did not stop the jibes. Many African professors were often abused by frat boys. It meant that no matter what level of education you had ‘a nigger was a nigger,’ bringing up the question how white were these tormentors, how could on understand what was flowing in their veins (Rhodes p.388).
Self-discrimination was also present. The children born out of rape were not treated in the same way as others. This is because they had lighter skin and descendants of the white man. The same people who should be helping themselves were also doing what their masters did. Children of mixed races also persecute themselves psychologically. This has been brought out by a mother who does not stay at ease just because she was of mixed race. Her life as the odd one out in a community of whites makes her feel uneasy. She thinks that the people surrounding her are judging her. Another pi...
