Within our Gates
Within our Gates is probably the longest surviving film written and produced by Oscar Micheaux, an African American elite who has, with doubt, shaped the history of cinema. The film provides an account of racial segregation in America during the 20th century purposefully directed to the black community. In the movie, Micheaux challenges the idea of white supremacy and intentionally instigates that racism is caused by ignorance and is a curse to national unity. He further seems to suggest that the unraveling of the true identity and capacities of African Americans is instrumental in restoring racial integration in America, especially between southern and northern whites. Various themes emerge throughout the film, including love, betrayal, black migration, rape, lynching, racial uplift, and murder. These themes, especially racial uplift and immigration, were uncommon in films during the early days, and therefore their portrayal in this film marked the evolution of film production in America.
