Gentrification in Los Angeles
Los Angeles, in the past recent decades, has been undergoing gentrification that has resulted in significant impacts on homeowners. It is not surprising nor an exaggeration that Los Angeles is a City with a housing crisis on its hands. The lack of adequate and affordable housing, the ever-skyrocketing home prices, increasing income disparity and lack of jobs, and the historic “redlining” have all contributed to the City of Angels’ housing crisis. Even though the advantages associated with gentrification are massive, its disadvantages outweigh the benefits. The recent times have witnessed communities undergo forced displacement to pave the way for upscaling. In Los Angeles, gentrification has contributed to increased discriminatory behaviors that draw a ridge between the poor and the rich due to the rise in property prices. Consequently, the original settlers, specifically Latinos, were forced to relocate due to increased marginalization. The state government, as well as property owners, have focused on providing elitist and high-end services that can only be afforded by the rich, secluding a majority of the public. Even though upscaling cities can have its advantages to service delivery, it is without a doubt that a few individuals can only enjoy the benefits. Therefore, affirmative actions should be used to balance the gentrification process so that it accommodates colored people and low-income earners.
