Introduction:
According to FAO, over 795 million people across the world are estimated to be chronically undernourished. Additionally, close 1Billion people live in abject poverty. This means that they can hardly afford their daily meals. Most of these poor people are poor women and children (2016 pg.1)
Reason to listen:
Access to food is a basic fundamental human right. However, due to poverty, poor politics, climate and global warming, natural disasters and scarce rainfall, food availability around the world has been scarce. This is especially severe in poor developing countries of Africa, Asia and South America. Millions of people across the world survive with less than a dollar a day. This means that they are incapable of meeting their daily nutritional needs.
Credibility statement:
I am sentimentally attached to the topic at hand. This is because I am a humanitarian at heart and food security touches the very core of human survival or existence. I believe that every person, regardless of country of origin, should be in a position to access good food for their well-being.
In regards to research, international non-governmental organizations such as FAO. These organizations do worldwide humanitarian activities aimed at alleviating poverty and solving social catastrophes such as hunger.
Thesis statement
My speech aims to highlight and showcase the global situation in regards to food security and highlight some of the mechanisms needed in order to alleviate the issue at hand. Being a human necessity, food shortages around the world should be curbed.

Proper providence of healthy food is a constitutional provision pledged by every government to its people.
* According to the World Food Summit of 1996, governments around the world pledged a commitment to fighting hunger and malnutrition in their respective countries (FAO 2016 pg.1).
* Statistics show that, to end hunger and poverty sustainably by 2030, the world require an estimated $267 billion every year in order to invest in social protection mechanisms that allow poor people to access food and improve their livelihoods (World Food Program 2017).
* According to IFAD (2016), most of the severely malnutrition and hungry people live in rural areas where they purely rely on small scale agriculture. When the rains fail, these people find themselves in food related problems and in dire need for government and humanitarian assistance.
Conclusion: access to food is not just a need but a constitutional provision binding governments to provide sustenance to their population. Governments are mandated to put the necessary infrastructure in place to ensure food is available for purchase by citizens.

Extreme weather phenomena, political wrangles, natural disasters, civil strife, and terrorism, have greatly impeded the world ability to achieve food security for all. These events occurring cumulatively have been the major cause of malnutrition and food related mortalities.
* According to FAO (2016), 24 African countries currently face hunger problems and food crisis due to civil strife.
* Additionally, FAO affirms that 1 in every 5 countries that are plagued by food shortages is characterized by weak governance, rampant corruption and selfish interests of the people in high government positions.
* IFAD representatives say that climate change and natural disasters are continually worsening the food situation in the world. This is especially for poor developing countries (2016 pg.1).
Conclusion: Hunger problems are food shortages are mainly as a result of human imposed problems. A combination of lack of peaceful coexistence and selfish interests by people in government are the leading cause of hunger deaths.
