Gender roles encompass attitudes, behaviors, and perceptions acceptable or desirable in the society based on sex. Gender roles are affected by sociocultural influences throughout individual development. What people perceive to be masculine or feminine is guided by culture. Societies play a significant role in influencing individual behavior and attitudes. A gender identity differs from one society to another and depends on the way in which individual members in the society assess the roles of males and females (Cuddy, 2015). Gender identity can be shaped by cultural backgrounds, religion, ethnicity groups, and family values. Gender is learned since it is a structural feature and its sociological significance is that it is used by the society to control its member’s behavior. Learning to act in conformity with one’s gender identity is a long process. Gender is used to socially group individuals and may lead to discriminations and prejudices. Gender identity has little to biological variables since it is guided by social variables in the society.
