Georgia Nurse Practice Act and Board of Registered Nursing Laws

Introduction
For APNs in Georgia, the Georgia Nurse Practice Act and Board of Registered Nursing laws dictate what degree of care they can deliver inside the state's borders and how much they can charge for their services. Patients need the best care possible, which is why these rules and regulations exist. To work as an APN in Georgia, one must hold a valid RN license, have completed an accredited APN program, and have passed a national certification exam in their area of specialization. All three prerequisites must be satisfied to practice as an APN in Georgia. Obtaining a DEA number and completing a prescriptive authority course recognized by the Georgia Board of Nursing are the first steps in becoming an advanced practice nurse (APN) in Georgia.
APN Scope of Practice
Scope
The Georgia Board of Nursing regulates Nurse Practitioners (NPs) in Georgia. When a person has completed the appropriate training, obtained the required certifications, and demonstrated ongoing competency defined by this organization, they are designated a Nurse Practitioner. This allows them to provide individual and family counseling, diagnoses, and treatments for acute and chronic illnesses. These responsibilities include ordering, administering, and prescribing tests, treatments, and medications. It also includes working with other providers when necessary, planning for situations beyond the scope of the NP's expertise, and completing other assigned tasks (Johnson et al., 2021). In Georgia, a nurse practitioner can perform various tasks like these.
Educational, Licensure, and Regulatory Requirements
The state of Georgia's educational requirements for nurse practitioners were built on the Consensus Model of Advanced Practice Registered Nurse Regulation. Nurses with advanced degrees and hands-on experience will always need a significant need. It takes three years after graduating from an accredited nursing program in Georgia to pass the NCLEX-RN exam and become a registered nurse in that state, which is required by law. In most situations, this means completing either an associate's or a bachelor's degree program. Only those who already possess valid licenses in other states are eligible to apply for licensure by endorsement in Georgia. An APRN (advanced practice registered nurse) must be certified nationally and annually. In addition to having a license, they should have sufficient clinical experience and educational preparation to diagnose and treat patients by prescribing pharmacologic and nonpharmacologic interventions when necessary.
NP Practice Authority
In Georgia, nurse practitioners have limited or restricted practice authority, despite their degree of education and experience. Nurse practitioners are only allowed to prescribe controlled substances or Legend medications in the presence of a licensed medical practitioner. The NPS can prescribe Legend medications under a registered physician's supervision due to a restricted prescriptive power policy. All nurse practitioners (NPs) in Georgia must have a protocol agreement with a supervising physician. They are not permitted to prescribe medicines on the Schedule II list or order particular diagnostic tests (Johnson et al., 2021). At least one aspect of nursing practice is made more difficult for nurse practitioners due to the limits imposed by state regulations. For the NP to be able to give patient care, they will be required to have supervision throughout their career, as well as delegation or management from an additional provider.
NP Prescriptive Authority
In the state of Georgia, the nurse practitioner has the prescriptive authority to write prescriptions and order the administration of controlled substances and legend medications, which fall under schedules II to V. This authority allows the nurse practitioner to write prescriptions and administer controlled substances and legend medications (Johnson et al., 2021). However, this is only if the use of these substances complies with the NP's scope of practice and the guidelines set in their collaborative practice agreement.
