Operating for more than 140 years, the Mandarin Oriental Hotel is a Hong Kong-based hotel and management organization that focuses on luxurious resorts, residences, and Hotels. The group currently has around 33 properties globally, with it owning 20 partially and wholly (The Mandarin Hotel Group, 2022). To ascertain that an organization is consistently competitive in the market, it is essential that the organization obtains an efficient human resource. Human resource management aids in bridging the gap between performance of employees and the strategic objectives of the organization (Boon et.al, 2019). The Mandarin hotel, unlike others, attained enhancement in Human Resource Management in a unique technique. This hotel built a hotel in a hotel specifically for the hotel staff, an outstanding concept from the Human Resource Management team in this field. This paper profoundly discusses the Mandarin case study, analyzing its secrets to success and the impacts it had to the working settings.
Identify the problem: Is the problem intrinsic, extrinsic, or both? Please describe each problem with research information found outside the case study.
Such a case study essentially bases on motivation of workers or the forces which kindle, control, and preserves behavior (Senyucel, 2009). It is essential to note that there are two forms of motivation, extrinsic and intrinsic. While extrinsic motivation typically bases on the necessity to attain a reward and evade punishment, intrinsic motivation emanates from an individual and is usually psychological (Cherry, 2020). The challenges in this case study were both extrinsic and intrinsic. The largest extrinsic problems in the Mandarin case study are the working setting and its significantly diverse environment. Alternatively, under intrinsic problem, each worker emanates from dissimilar departments which entail different background concerns. Furthermore, each employee has dissimilar experience in working, different age, gender, and familial concerns. Such assorted concerns are essentially the major difference in intrinsic challenges in the working setting. Then again, it is essential to note that the turnover rate may be termed as motivation due to the magnitude of intrinsic challenges.
Diagnose the cause(s): Describe the root cause for the problem. Does it matter whether the cause is intrinsic, extrinsic? If so, in what ways?
Based on analysis, it is evident that the root cause of the challenges encountered by Mandarin Oriental is ineffective human resource practices. To be specific, the organization has outdated regulation that do not sufficiently acknowledge workers and both their intrinsic and extrinsic demands. The case study scrutinized the likelihood of tackling extrinsic challenges on the basis of Herzberg’s motivation-hygiene theory. This theory elucidates that dissatisfaction primarily happen in the absence of hygiene factors which satisfaction happens in the presence of motivational factors (Senyucel, 2009). These two are equally essential in ascertaining that workers are continuously motivated and happy. Marshall et.al (2015) surmised that for an organization to be successful in such a field, it is essential that it ascertains competitive advantage by having efficient human resource management to sufficiently attain and preserve workers with proficient skills and aptitudes than rivals. Typically, appropriately establishing the employee satisfaction and consumer satisfaction link ascertains that employees treat consumers with outmost respect and facilitate unmatched consumer services (DeFranzo, 2017).
