Abstract
The growth of most places in the world shows, which they all have gone through a lot of changes than can currently, is thought possible. Shoreditch is no exception. At face value, it can be said that cities just became what they are today from sheer luck. The present Middlesex, which constitute Shoreditch, is a good example of the struggles, conquests after conquests, and challenging economic times that most big cities in the world have gone through.
Shoreditch is known to have started as a rural centre, where no one could believe that it could be what it is today. It is a place that started growing in as early as the 1st century, where the inhabitants faced challenges that started establishing a new culture, language, and administrative structure that have contributed a lot to the way the present England is.
Introduction
Shoreditch area falls under Middlesex County, which is now part of London city. London is known as the capital city of England, as well as the United Kingdom. Shoreditch only merged later with London at around 1889. As a city, London has a long and interesting history that dates back to as many years as 2000.The interesting London easily merged with Shoreditch, because Shoreditch was the parish of the Church of England. Therefore the discussion of Shoreditch brings automatically the discussion of London, especially after the merger. London city is said to first have started by around 43 AD, and like any other or most other cities, through war ,where Brutus of Troy is said to have fought against Gog and Magog ,the giants who were occupying that area at that time(Ralph,2003,109) .From its inception, the growth of the city ,which is one of the most present influential cities in the world, has known thick and thin ,in many ways. In a sense Shoreditch has grown to what it is today, not through a bed of roses. Its whole history is very interesting indeed (Jay and Robert, 2007, p.35).
An historical study since 1900
By 1900, London was still the best city in the world; the growth of this city was mainly from its significant past. At this time Shoreditch had already been included in the county of London. The Roman Empire is known historically to have occupied the whole area of London. In fact at one time London used to be referred to us Roman London. The coming of the Romans must have been a major factor for Shoreditch to have come to existence. The growth of London, and Shoreditch after the merger started going hand to hand. When the Romans invaded London, the area was still poorly developed. The Romans then started working on its administration, and infrastructure in as much as it was possible .In the long run the culture and civilization of the people of London was directly influenced by the Romans (Ralph,2003 ,p. 55). By 1900, London was known as the largest empire in history, it was at this time that the city was very developed. It actually was the largest city in the world by 1825 to 1925, before being overtaken by New York .The contributions of Shoreditch are the ones that made London to have the larger impact it had worldwide especially in as far as religious challenges and developments are concerned(Jackson, 2014,p.28).
As Shoreditch developed, and so did London .The lives in Shoreditch became the lives of London. There are many reasons that led for New York to have become better that London. The actual reason for the deterioration of the living standards of London as the largest city of the world was the influences of the World War I, where the bombing by the Germans were very intense resulting into extensive damages and deaths of people. It goes, therefore, without saying that New York was able to have overtaken London because of the effects of the war. Silver town explosion was the largest explosion ever in the history of London .Many young people died, the living standards were directly affected and the military was also badly affected. The deterioration of London can actually serve as a great lesson to most cities of the world , that may desire to be even greater than London at one time in life .However this deterioration did not affect the differences in Christianity that had emerged, so Shoreditch remained influential in its purposes(Ralph, 2003,p.94).
The war resulted into the need for repairs and renovations of the city, and adjustment to way of life .It was such areas that affected development, because a lot of money had to be used in the repairs, other than crucial developments of the city. This was not easy, but given the level of living that London, and especially Shoreditch people had been in, this was not very hard for them to work on the expansion of the city (Ralph, 2003,p. 16). This resulted into the expansion of a better infrastructure in railways, trams, and the underground .Car ownership by the natives also increased. It was at this time that London started getting to its best form. Then three years after the World War II, 1948, summer Olympics of that time was held in Wembley stadium (Jackson, 2014, p.111). This was a big plus to the city, such that the social amenities increased faster .As a consequence of these developments, musicians like the Beatles in 1960s caused a big influence to the youth. London is actually what it is today because of many other areas of importance apart from the administration abilities .The city has really expanded including its other counties like the Essex ,Hertfordshire, Surrey ,and Kent. These counties have greatly expanded mainly because of the most contributions and impact that London as a city, has had on them. It must be emphasised that a place like Shoreditch is no exception from the other positive developments of London city (Jay and Robert, 2007, p.300).
Faster growth and expansion the Shoreditch was also hastened by the new developments in architectural designs, which led to construction of modern houses. Most of these houses were able to be constructed n the city mainly through the contributions of both the administration and the natives. The economy of the city was more stable, which showed that the most natives were also at a better class of living. Education standards were also at their peak which made the elites to make their contributions in the most areas of the city of London, and Shoreditch (Ali and Cunch, 2005, p.593).
The world wars resulted into immigrants mainly from Germany to come to London. The immigrants contributed in the rise in population of London .In many ways, Immigrants from other parts of the world have also been coming, making London what it is today(Jackson,2014,p.130). For a city like London to adjust to the needs and requirements of its immigrants, it’s normally not a big deal. This explains why London has expanded faster as city to its present level. It must in fact, be recalled that London is still one of the best cities of the world because of the hard work of its people. Shoreditch is also what it is to today not by accident .For a place to develop from a rural setting to a more metropolitan setting; the way Shoreditch has become is actually not an easy achievement (Ralph, 2003, p.45).
Ethnography
The natives of Shoreditch from the local churches to schools can confirm that, the place has for sure a long history which dates from as early as the first century, the days of the Roman Empire. The journey of this great city has not been an easy one. When the Roman Empire ruled, it introduced the Roman Catholic Church (Jackson, 2014, p.584). This serves as a sure pointer as to why some of the natives are still in the church .It was around 1780 when the Protestants started opposing the Roman Catholics, until at one time, especially 19th century when London, especially Shoreditch became full of Protestantism. The opposition of the Catholics by the early protestants was at first seen as detrimental, only for it to be realised later that it led to positive changes in the faith and culture of the people of Britain .Any way, this can be said to be one way in which development comes (Ali and Cunch, 2005,p.215).
The 18th century is said to have been the crucial moment where Shoreditch grew faster especially the contributions of the Industrial revolution, which played a very important role in the growth of the British Empire. All the same, the Roman Empire had a very significant contribution in the early Shoreditch. Anyway, the place came to know changes of regimes as time went by from the Roman Empire, Anglo-Saxon to Norman and Medieval regimes to the present Shoreditch (Ralph, 2003, p.11).
The regimes that have ruled Britain, according to the natives brought so many changes. The changes were actually positive, as they had a direct impact to the people of Shoreditch as we know it today .Main areas of inequality exist in social classes, even at one time the great hunger that affected most of London, it affected Shoreditch as well which resulted into the widening of the gap between the rich and the poor. So what this means is that London has known or grown through good and bad. The negatives changes were al...
