The House of Bernarda Alba and the Family of Pascual Duarte
The House of Bernanda Alba is a drama about women in Spain villages where a tyrannical mother lives with her five daughters. Later, eldest daughter dies and a selfish marriage advances causing tragic impacts for entire family. On the other hand, the Family of Pascual Darte is a story of a Spanish peasant called Pascual Duarte who is born in a world of brutal hatred, depravity, and poverty. He has committed murders all though his life and imprisoned waiting for execution. This essay aims at comparing Pascual’s mother in the drama Family of Pascual Darte and Bernanda as a story mother in the House of Bernanda. The essay will explain how the two sides of the family live and how characters and perspective of people differ when it comes to making decisions in life.
Comparing the two mothers in these dramas, Bernanda who is a mother of five women in play House of Bernanda Alba is better than Pascual’s in story of Family of Pascual Darte. Bernanda understands because she seems to realize that her daughters have a capability of desiring sex even though she takes her role by harshly keeping them from expressing their desires. On the other hand, Pascual’s mother does not understand the meaning of marriage and his son because Pascoul actions of murdering are out of hatred and split of the family. She does not understand her daughter who dived into prostitution, as she was sick coming home and going again because she could have taken measures regarding her situation.
Bernanda is caring because she gets terrified that her daughters might accept demands of a man they seemed to love called Pepe. Although La Poncia tells her that her daughters will break free if given freedom, she believes that it is her role to care about decisions they make so that they will not make mistakes. On the other hand, Pascual’s mother does not care about him when he is imprisoned making his life miserable by deciding to submerge in pain and anguish. Alternatively, Mario his other disabled son suffered to an extent that pigs ate his ears and her mother did not care at all. In addition, she does not care having an affair with a different man in her husband’s back.
Pascual’s mother being a frequent violent woman, she cannot be compared to Barnanda who is just insulting. Barnanda insults Angustia “slut,” strikes her but Pascual’s mother hits, mistreats her child Mario, and laughed when her lover is killing him. Barnanda strikes and insults because of being overprotective but Pascual’s mother intentionally scorns and allows his lover kill his son Mario after being born mentally disabled and not able to walk.
Bernanda is strict on her daughters and other people among family members. For example, Adela tries to be eccentric with her ideas of life and love and goes ahead and willing to be mistress of Pepe. Bermanda becomes strict on this because she never wants Adele become immoral by not making right choices. Bernanda tells her daughters that Pepe is a man of village and does not fit any of them despite the hatred and bitterness her daughters have on one another. Pascual’s mother is slippery because she is unfaithful to her husband making her immoral. Moreover, being violent makes his son take it to be the only way to solve problems. She is not strict on her daughter’s moves.
Pascual’s mother is living in poverty and this comes out clear that she leaves her son Mario live on floor with dogs. In addition, she abuses alcohol instead of raising economic status of her family. Barnanda is not poor because her family eats well despite the fact that they are many and organized. Moreover, her richness is explained by her managing the funeral of Adele and his husband, the expensive jewels her daughters had explains how rich she is to sustain them.
Bermanda shows her trait of being moral. Despite her being too free to gossip and even neighbors criticizing her, she has a fear of being seen wicked and this motivates her moral code. Pascual’s mother on the other hand is very immoral by cheating on her husband with his lover who is violent and immoral too. In spite of her keeping his marriage by being decent, she decides to have a child with another man who is disabled. God punishes her immorality, as the son she gives birth to is not normal making Barnanda better in this case. She also seems comfortable with the decision her daughter makes by being a prostitute and she is comfortable of his son Pascual raping Lola and making her pregnant.
Barnanda is inquisitive as she asks her daughters about every step and decisions they try to make. For example, she asks her daughter why she was looking at men who came for funeral and this makes her cautious of what her daughters do. Pascual’s mother does not ask his son any questions even if he becomes a murderer and violent and the decisions his s...
